On a Tuesday night on Nathan Lane, in an unassuming commercial stretch of Plymouth just off Highway 169 and Highway 394, a woman in her fifties walks into a studio alone. She has never danced with a partner before. She does not need one tonight. The first group class is free, and the only requirement posted anywhere on the SOUL Ballroom website is that you show up.

That single design choice, no partner required, is the reason a 2,400-square-foot dance floor tucked into an unglamorous corner of Plymouth has become something closer to a town square than a business. Most write-ups of the place stop at "nice local dance studio." That undersells what's actually happening inside.

One Studio, No Substitutes

Plymouth does not have a dance hall district. It has one dedicated ballroom studio, period, and it sits at 76 Nathan Lane North, a location most residents would drive past without a second look. The building is wheelchair accessible, parking is free, and the studio is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with Sunday dark.

That scarcity matters more than it sounds like it should. In a suburb built around cul-de-sacs, soccer practices, and commutes into Minneapolis, there is exactly one address where a stranger can walk in, pay nothing for the first hour, and end up dancing a rumba with someone they met five minutes earlier. There is no second option to compare it against. If you want ballroom, Latin, or swing instruction in Plymouth, SOUL Ballroom is the answer, not one of several.

Two Years of Looking for the Right Address

As Plymouth Magazine reported, the studio exists because two competitive dancers, Igor and Meghan Afonkin, spent two years searching for a space of their own before they found this one. They opened in May 2023, and the choice of Plymouth wasn't random. Meghan had danced previously at Summit Dance Shoppe and already knew the west metro had an appetite for this kind of instruction that nobody local was fully serving.

That two-year search is worth sitting with. Championship-level dancers with an established reputation could have opened anywhere in the Twin Cities. They chose a quiet commercial corner of Plymouth instead, betting that a community built around families and long commutes still had room for something built around movement and connection.

Meghan told Plymouth Magazine, "Plymouth has been great, and the community has really welcomed us."

That welcome has continued since they opened. Three years in, the studio's reputation backs it up. Independent review platforms put SOUL Ballroom at a five-star average across more than 170 reviews on one aggregator and 45 reviews on another, the kind of consistency that doesn't happen by accident in a suburb with no shortage of other ways to spend a Tuesday night.

The Rule That Does the Work

Here's what separates SOUL Ballroom from a typical class-based studio: the no-partner rule isn't a footnote, it's the entire operating model. Social dance parties, open to all skill levels, run on the same premise. You can walk in solo, and you will dance with multiple people over the course of an evening, not just the person you arrived with.

That rule is what turns a dance studio into a genuine gathering spot rather than a couples-only activity. The instruction spans a real range:

• Ballroom staples like waltz and foxtrot
• Latin styles including salsa and bachata
• Swing
• Wedding-specific choreography built around a couple's own story

A widow rebuilding a social life after losing a spouse, a newly single professional who moved to Plymouth for work, a retired couple looking for something other than another dinner reservation. None of them need to show up with a plan or a date. They need to show up.

When Two People Need More Than a First Dance

The clearest evidence that this studio has become embedded in how Plymouth marks its milestones is the wedding pipeline running through it. SOUL Ballroom built a specific program for engaged couples called SOUL Mate. It starts with a 45-minute individual consultation, no dancing required yet, just a conversation about what the couple wants their first dance to feel like. From there, packages run up to ten private lessons, and the top tier adds a group session where the entire wedding party learns alongside the couple.

Plymouth Magazine profiled one couple who went through the program, Emma Squires-Sperling and Patrick Burns, whose first dance became part of their wedding story rather than an afterthought rehearsed the week before the ceremony. That's the pattern the studio has built toward: couples who live in or near Plymouth treating a dance studio the way they might treat a florist or a caterer, as a vendor who shapes one of the more memorable minutes of their wedding day.

The Calendar Keeps It Alive

A studio that only ran private lessons would be a business. What makes SOUL Ballroom feel like a fixture is the recurring calendar of public events layered on top. A free Latin Night ran on August 12, open to the community rather than restricted to enrolled students. That kind of programming repeats throughout the year, which is precisely how a studio on an otherwise easy-to-overlook stretch of Plymouth ends up hosting event rentals in its own space when it isn't running classes.

The studio's own space, that same 2,400 square feet, also gets booked out for private parties and celebrations, meaning the room that hosts a Tuesday beginner class is the same room where someone might celebrate a fortieth birthday or an anniversary on a Saturday night. It is one address doing the job of several different venues, which is part of why it keeps showing up in conversation among people who live nearby.

None of this required Plymouth to build a new venue or repurpose a park pavilion. It required two dancers willing to spend two years looking for the right four walls, and a rule simple enough to lower the barrier for anyone curious enough to walk through the door alone.

If you're a longtime Plymouth resident who has never set foot in the building on Nathan Lane, the free first class removes the only real excuse. If you're newer to the neighborhood and still looking for the kind of place where you recognize faces after a few visits, this is one of the few addresses in town built specifically for that.
