Stand at the trail access point off 10th Avenue North and Vicksburg Lane on a Saturday morning and you'll watch two completely different crowds cross paths without noticing they're on different trails. A road cyclist in full kit rolls east toward Golden Valley on smooth pavement. A gravel rider in wool socks and a hydration pack heads west onto crushed limestone, aiming for Winsted, thirty miles out. They wave. They don't realize they just split off the Luce Line State Trail onto two trails that only share a name.

That split is the whole story of how Plymouth's stretch of trail works, and it explains why one brewery a few blocks off the corridor has quietly become the place where both halves of that trail culture actually meet.

Two Trails Wearing One Name

Vicksburg Lane is the hinge. West of it, the Minnesota DNR maintains 63 miles of former railroad grade running from Plymouth clear out to Cosmos, with a crushed limestone surface for the first 30 miles to Winsted and a parallel dirt treadway built for horses. Snowmobiles are allowed on that western stretch past Stubbs Bay Road in Orono, and so is cross-country skiing once the snow builds up.

East of Vicksburg Lane, the trail changes ownership and character entirely. Three Rivers Park District paves and plows this segment, which they call the Luce Line Regional Trail, and it runs 8.81 miles from Plymouth through Golden Valley into Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis. It connects there to the Medicine Lake Regional Trail and Bassett Creek Regional Trail, both of which Three Rivers also maintains. There's no equestrian tread on this half. There's also no limestone dust on your tires.

So the same trail name covers a rugged, unpaved, horse-friendly corridor heading toward small towns west of the metro, and a paved, plowed, commuter-friendly path heading into Minneapolis. A rider who only knows the eastern half has never touched the western half's surface, and vice versa. Plymouth sits at the exact point where both versions begin, which makes it the only place on the entire 63-mile system where you can choose your trail's personality before you've gone a single mile.

The Building Where Both Halves Meet

A few blocks off that split, at 12901 16th Avenue North, sits Luce Line Brewing, and it has built its entire identity around being close enough to both halves of the trail to catch whoever's on either one. The taproom is easy to reach whether you rolled in on limestone or pavement, and the patio, described by regulars as dog-friendly and built for spreading out, functions as a kind of unofficial rest stop where riders headed in opposite directions end up at adjacent picnic tables.

The brewery didn't stumble into this. It built programming around it. There's a weekly running club and a cycling group, both organized around the trail itself rather than around the beer list, under the tagline "born from the trail." On weekend mornings, before the taproom officially opens for pours, Luce Line Café takes over the space, serving coffee and Belgian waffles, including a chicken and waffle plate with sriracha hot honey, to the early crowd coming off a run.

None of this happened by accident. In a CCX Media report, owner Tim Naumann described the mood at one of the taproom's marquee fall events this way:

"It's going to be a fun, packed day of great beer, great food, wonderful music. The mayor's tapping the kegs, we're going to have 30 businesses here kind of celebrating the success of the year together with everyone else, it's just gonna be a great time."

The quote describes a neighborhood gathering built around more than beer: local businesses, food, music, and a mayor-led keg tapping all share the day.

The Weekend That Keeps Growing

That marquee event is Oktoberfest, and its own history tracks how much weight this one building has started to carry for the neighborhood. In 2024, it was a single Saturday, September 28, anchored by a Plymouth Parade in Place marketplace built in partnership with the Plymouth Rotary Club, featuring booths from roughly 30 local businesses and organizations. By 2025, it had grown into a nine-day run, from September 26 through October 4, with a full slate that included a Mayor's Keg Tapping ceremony, stein-holding and costume contests for best dirndl and best lederhosen, and a Queen tribute band closing out the tent on the marquee Saturday.

This year's version, per the brewery's own event listing, keeps the shape tighter again: a Friday night built around traditional Kölsch service, followed by a Saturday that runs the full day, with Mayor Jeff Wosje back for the ceremonial keg tap, steinholding and costume contests, and a live set from yacht rock act Captain Karl and His Castaways in the early evening.

The format keeps changing, but the anchor doesn't. Every year, whether it runs one day or nine, the mayor shows up to tap a keg at a brewery, and a Rotary-organized marketplace turns the parking lot into a stand-in for a town square.

What the Keg Tap Is Actually Funding

Here's the part that separates this from a standard brewery promotion. Oktoberfest proceeds at Luce Line don't just cover overhead. They go to the Luce Line Foundation, which uses the money specifically to redevelop the old railroad spur near the brewery to improve cyclist access to the trail and to build out other park amenities along the corridor.

In other words, the event that celebrates the trail is also the event that pays to improve the trail. The mayor isn't just showing up for a photo op with a stein in hand. He's tapping a keg that helps fund the exact infrastructure his own residents use every weekend. That's a tighter loop between a private business and public trail maintenance than most neighborhoods can point to, and it's the reason the brewery's relationship with the trail reads as more than convenient geography.

Why This Is the Neighborhood, Not a Sales Pitch

None of this requires you to be shopping for a house in Plymouth. It requires you to already live here and to be trying to figure out what to do this weekend, or to be the kind of person who wants to know why a keg tap at a brewery involves the mayor. The answer is that Plymouth is one of the only spots on 63 miles of trail where the surface itself changes under your feet, and the one business that sits closest to that change has spent several years turning that geographic accident into a running club, a weekend café, and a fall tradition that funds its own upkeep.

That's not something you'd find by searching "best breweries near me." It's something you notice only if you've ridden both halves of the trail yourself, or asked someone who has.

If you're already planning your weekend around the Friday Kölsch pour or Saturday's keg tap, you already know this neighborhood better than most guides will tell you. And if you're the kind of person who reads a piece like this because you're curious about the place you live rather than the place you're thinking about leaving, that's exactly the kind of local curiosity Aaron Lowe built his practice around. Let's Connect if there's ever a question about this corner of the west metro I haven't answered yet.
