If you live anywhere near County Road 47 in the Cheshire Lane pocket of Plymouth, you've spent the better part of two years reading the same orange construction fencing two different ways. Some of it meant the park. Some of it meant the road. Most of the time there was no way to tell which was which from the driver's seat, which is why so many residents assumed the whole stretch was one long project that had simply run long.

It wasn't. Lake Camelot Park and the Chankahda Trail Reconstruction Project are two separate city undertakings that happened to share a fence line, a construction season, and in places, a contractor. One of them is essentially done. The other one still has work ahead of it before the snow flies. Knowing which is which is the difference between planning a trip to the park this weekend and planning a detour.

Two projects, one address

The park side of the story starts in November 2024, when the Plymouth Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission reviewed a master plan for Lake Camelot Park and the City Council approved it on November 26. That plan called for a new playground, rebuilt boardwalks over the lake, a four-season restroom building, and a round of smaller upgrades: a relocated dock, new site furnishings, a portable toilet enclosure, a basketball hoop, bike racks.

The road side of the story is older and bigger. Chankahda Trail has been under reconstruction in phases since 2023, and the current phase, the one that swallowed 2025 and most of 2026, runs from Cheshire Parkway to Northwest Boulevard. It's a full street rebuild: new curb and gutter, a roundabout at the Teakwood Lane intersection, watermain replacement, storm sewer work, and trail installation along the corridor. This is not a resurfacing job. It's the kind of project that closes lanes for a season at a time.

Because Lake Camelot Park sits directly on that corridor, the two projects ended up sharing equipment, staging areas, and in the case of the park's boardwalks, a construction timeline that was explicitly folded into the trail project's schedule rather than run on its own clock. That's the detail most residents missed. The city's own project updates note that boardwalk construction was slated to begin in January 2026 "as part of the Chankahda Trail Project," not as a standalone parks job. When you understand that, the pace of the closures starts to make sense. A playground replacement on its own rarely takes a year. A playground replacement bundled into a street reconstruction with a roundabout, a watermain, and storm sewer work absolutely can.

What actually happened at the lake

The boardwalks were the slowest piece, because they cross wetland and open water and can only be built in narrow weather windows. The north boardwalk came out first, removed and salvaged starting November 11, 2025, with the lumber kept for reuse on the south dock rather than hauled off as waste. The south boardwalk followed, with removal starting January 13, 2026, and the new south dock going in later, on February 4. Tree clearing around the site wrapped up by the end of March, and the contractor formally mobilized back onto the park grounds on April 15.

From there the site moved fast for a municipal project. The north parking lot closed for good on April 21 and has stayed closed through construction. Grading and restroom footings went in through May. By late June, the playground itself was installed, and the poured-in-place safety surfacing and asphalt paving that follow a playground install were scheduled right behind it. The Cheshire parking lot, which had been closed since mid-April for restroom construction, reopened on June 23.

The restroom building, a four-season structure at 5724 Cheshire Parkway, took the rest of the summer to finish. Utility hookups for water and sewer were scheduled for the week of July 27, which meant the Cheshire lot closed again briefly, from July 27 through August 1, just for that connection work. By August 3, crews were installing the portable toilet enclosure and setting picnic tables under the gazebo. The basketball hoop and bike racks were the last items on the list, listed as "within the next few weeks" in that same update.

Here's where things stand as of the most recent city posting:

For a family that used to park on the north side to get closer to the lake, that lot staying shut is the one piece worth knowing before you load the car. The Cheshire entrance is your reliable option right now.

Why the fencing on Chankahda Trail itself hasn't come down

The park being functionally finished doesn't mean the corridor is. The Chankahda Trail Reconstruction Project's current phase runs from Cheshire Parkway all the way to Northwest Boulevard, and the section between Yucca Lane and Northwest Boulevard was closed outright before reopening to traffic in late July, when the project moved into what the city calls Stage 3B. Reopening to traffic at that stage doesn't mean the work is done. It means the crews have shifted their focus elsewhere along the same stretch, likely toward the roundabout at Teakwood Lane and the remaining curb, gutter, and trail work that a project of this size still has to complete before winter.

So if you're heading to Lake Camelot Park by car for the first time in a while, expect the park itself to feel finished and the drive there to still have some construction texture to it. That's normal for a project of this scope, and it's worth checking the city's Chankahda Trail Reconstruction Project page before you go if you're coming from the Northwest Boulevard side rather than Cheshire Parkway.

The part that's easy to miss

None of this is dramatic news. Nobody's cutting a ribbon. But it's the kind of local detail that actually changes how you plan an evening: which entrance to use, whether the boardwalk loop is walkable again, whether that castle-and-dragon playground your kids have been asking about for a year is actually back in service. It is. The lumber from the old north boardwalk is holding up part of the new south dock. The restroom building your neighbors watched go up brick by brick all spring finally has running water. The road that made all of it feel like it was taking forever is still, technically, taking a little while longer.

That's the kind of thing that only shows up if you're paying attention to the corner of town you actually live in, not just skimming a general "things to do in Plymouth" list. Lake Camelot Park is back. Chankahda Trail is still catching up to it.

If you're the kind of person who tracks these small shifts in your own neighborhood, whether it's a boardwalk reopening or a roundabout finally taking shape, you probably already know your street better than most agents ever will. That's exactly the kind of local read Aaron Lowe brings to conversations about Plymouth real estate, whether you're thinking about a move now or just keeping an eye on the market for later.
